Is Sidney Crosby a dirty player?

Aug 28, 2010, 5:30 PM EDT

dirtycrosby.jpgMaybe it’s just because it is the summer time or perhaps his gold medal winning goal forced people to eat some crow, but the cottage industry on hating Sidney Crosby dried up a bit lately.

For those of you who simply don’t have the same spring in your step unless the NHL’s golden child is getting run through the mud, you might find this little nugget interesting. A lot of bloggers are putting their own sardonic twists on Puck Daddy’s popular Mount Rushmore feature, so it’s little surprise that the irreverent Penguins blog The Pensblog created their “Mount Dirtymore” which chronicles the team’s dirtiest players of the last 20 years.

(Naturally, the “dirty” scoring system is based on the quantity of Cristina Aguileras each player “earns.”)

crosbyfights.jpgThree of the players won’t leave Penguins fans (or fans of teams who despise the Penguins) with their jaws dropped by any means: Ulf Samuelsson is a notorious villain, Matt Cooke made plenty of enemies in his career, particularly last season and Billy Tibbets … well, he’s just kind of creepy.

Yet casual fans might be surprised to see the Second Savior of the Franchise, Sidney Crosby on that Photoshop. Here is the explanation from Pensblog. (You should click on the link anyway, even if it’s just to see their “shocked faces” GIFs, which include Apollo Creed’s wife reacting to her boxer husband’s tragic in-ring death in “Rocky IV.”)

As is the case with all great players, they are constantly hounded, sticked, hooked, speared, etc., every time they hop over the bench.

Is that a built-in excuse for some of Crosby’s dirty plays? Most likely.
But you’ll be hard-pressed to find multiple clips of dudes like Kane and Toews doing this kind of stuff.

To me, there are two types of sports fans: pom-pom waving types who believe in their teams blindly and glass half-empty types who are willing to acknowledge the flaws of their favorites. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being in either group, but I subscribe to the latter club and cannot deny that the same competitive fire that drives Crosby also pushes him to do some regrettable things. The considerable communal vitriol for Crosby can be over the top at times, but he does earn at least some of that disdain by breaking the rules.

Now that you have my take, I need to know how you feel. Is Crosby a dirty player or just a competitor? Cast your vote in the poll below.

  1. Mike - Aug 28, 2010 at 5:57 PM

i’m an avid flyers fan and i hate crosby as much as every1 else does in this city but i wouldnt say he’s a dirty player. i’m still not over all the diving he did earlier in his career (and still does occasionally) but i will say that he is a targeted player. i would get a little fed up 2 if i were him. i played hockey for over 10 years and sometimes it just gets to you

  2. NYRFTW - Aug 28, 2010 at 6:38 PM

He’s really not a dirty player, but he’s a cheap player? There is kind of a difference. I consider my man Sean Avery, or Jarkko Ruutu a dirty player and I don’t think Crosby is nowhere near them in that dept. I do think he is a cheap player though by taking dives, kicking the feet out from Birons feet behind the net a few years ago when Biron went to play the puck, complaining to the refs every time he is touched, whining, crying, asking the pa announcer in Washingtons building to make an announcement to stop throwing hats, which the announcer obviously didn’t do. You know all of the resaons people in America outside of Pittsburgh hate him and love to make fun of him! He gets no respect and never will in America outside of Pittsburgh! People like to say oh you hate him because he’s good and he’s not on your team. That’s not it at all. It’s because he crys over anything and everything. Good old Cindy Crybaby will always have that rep forever in the states. I loved Yzerman, Lemieux, Hull, Jagr and they were all excellent players not playing for my team. They played hard and paid the price without complaining just like any other hockey player does except for Cindy. Someone get that baby a bottle now before the season starts! He’s Bettmans daughter and Bettman will do anything for his daughter! Where is the outdoor game going to be in 2012 in Pittsburgh again?

  3. jpak - Aug 28, 2010 at 6:57 PM

Wow, calling Crosby dirty then mentioning Kane as if he is a model citizen, Kane beat up a cab driver over 15 cents. Crosby is attacked constantly and every once and awhile he gives players a taste of their own medicine. If you want to talk dirty players Crosby is not even on that list.

  4. Alex - Aug 28, 2010 at 7:44 PM

Dirty … no … but as NYRFTW said above (can not BELIEVE im agreeing with a ranger’s fan … blech) he is cheap. Every time I watch him play he whines and snivels. I just keep begging the other team to knock him into next week.
He doesn’t deserve half the attention he gets but he is the NHL’s golden child and we must revere him … Bettman tells us to.

  5. goon - Aug 28, 2010 at 9:03 PM

I think Crosby is a cry baby and a whiner.

  6. al - Aug 28, 2010 at 9:03 PM

He’s a competitor that hates to lose any battle or game. He gets frustrated and retaliates when he gets a chance. He takes way more abuse (more than 95% of players)than he dishes out. That what I like about Crosby. He likes to fight his own battles!

  7. coach - Aug 28, 2010 at 9:48 PM

Its just sad that Sid doesn’t have the players, bodyguard for him, Gretzy had bodyguards. Penguins should have done that for him. He’s a good player but lets face it he can be a whiner when he has goons coming at him at the time.

  8. steve - Aug 28, 2010 at 10:21 PM

crosby is one of the most exciting players to come across in a lone time he can score pass and fight not afraid to fight his own battles and for people to say he is a winer is true but look at the abuse he takes

  9. Reality! - Aug 28, 2010 at 10:33 PM

Sidney Crosby is one of the most immature “league created” super stars of all time. Anyone with a brain knows this already. When he gets stopped or is held up, he doesn’t think twice about carving guys up with hi stick. Not to mention the late cheap shots when he knows he can get a way with it and doesn’t have to back it up. The tape doesn’t lie Pittsburgh!!! Deal with it!! He’ll NEVER be the next Mario Lamoureux! He’s not even the best player on your team!! Dirty is as dirty does, and Cindy Crosby is a gutless punk!!

  10. Detroit - Aug 29, 2010 at 12:21 AM

Wanting to get Pavel Datsyuk or Hank Zetterburg to drop their gloves doesn’t make you a tuff guy with HEART! Two handers on the back of knees and on the wrists doesn’t make you a tuff guy. Oh Canada MY ASS!! HALE OVECHKIN!!!

  11. HockeyMike - Aug 29, 2010 at 1:10 AM

You are a tool. Enjoy watching the playoffs without the Rangers in there- AGAIN! You know nothing about hockey and have obviously not seen any of the players you mentioned. They all complain to refs, thats what they do. It doesn’t change a call but may buy the next one. If you don’t get that, than stick to a pansy sport like basketball or golf idiot.

  12. HockeyMike - Aug 29, 2010 at 1:14 AM

Your friggin joking right?? I just finished watching reruns on the Pens-Wings series and if there were more Wings cheap shots in a series that were not called I would love to see them.

  13. NEO1228 - Aug 29, 2010 at 2:00 AM

Calling yourself HockeyMike is an insult to ice hockey. Do you know anything about hockey? You must be watching reruns from tapes that are edited by the Penguins organization. The result of the poll above speaks for itself. You should watch the game LIVE instead of reruns the next time the Red Wings and Penguins play each other. That way, you won’t miss out when Crybaby slash Pavel and Z out of frustration.

  14. Randy - Aug 29, 2010 at 5:12 AM

Hey, James? Go screw yourself. You ignorant sack of pus. I guess I can’t be surprised at such a ridiculous article coming from NBCSPORTS. You’ve given us the likes of Mike Florio. Not to mention the knuckle-draggers that post on here. You all suck.
Crosby is the greatest hockey player in the game today. Dig, @$$wipes? Ovechkin is a one-note hockey player. Why not talk about him? And, the fact that he is a jerk. Most NHL players will even tell you that. But, James….we can’t expect much more from a hack blogger like you. Stuff it!

  15. Randy - Aug 29, 2010 at 6:02 AM

As I recall, it was the Red Wings doing plenty of whining after the Pens whipped them to win the Stanley Cup to years ago. Crying after the game about Sid not sticking around to shake hands. In reality, the Wings left the ice soon after the game because they couldn’t stand the thought of choking to the Pens. You are an @$$.

  16. Rob - Aug 29, 2010 at 6:22 AM

The only dirty, cheapshot going on here is this groundless article by the author. You sir, have failed.

  17. Rob - Aug 29, 2010 at 6:31 AM

    Speaking of gutless punks….

  18. Dino - Aug 29, 2010 at 6:33 AM

James O’Brien must be a drunken Mick.

  19. planktonDisciple - Aug 29, 2010 at 10:28 AM

Look at plus minus for last year. Crosby was about plus 12 and Ove was about plus 45. Must be because Ove is a one note player.

  20. PolegoJim - Aug 29, 2010 at 10:40 AM

    Reality nailed it.
Red Wings whinning Randy? Cheap shots HockeyMikey? You must be the ones giving Crosby lessons. Red Wings are as gracious in losing as they are in winning, and they gave the Pens all the credit deserved in the win. What that part Mike.
Crosby isn’t dirty, just a cheapshot punk who can’t take physical play without whinning. My proof? Just about ever single post game interview he does when he’s blanked and skunked.

  21. Rob - Aug 29, 2010 at 10:41 AM

Yeah, and Crosby won a Gold Medal. Went to the Stanley Cup twice and one the Cup once. You can trash talk when Ovechkin wins a Cup.

  22. Randy - Aug 29, 2010 at 10:49 AM

You wouldn’t know truth if it walked up and bit you on the half-moons. The Red Wings suck. Get you nose out from their @$$ and maybe you can get a handle on reality. And, Detroit is a garbage hole. And, good luck with the Lions again this season. Ha!

  23. tilldothatbulls - Aug 29, 2010 at 10:55 AM

hey bud. where r u , looking for u,…that thing http://sportscomplainer.com/nhl u told me about, is it new. and what else u find lately?

  24. Mike - Aug 29, 2010 at 11:08 AM

wow man who knew a flyers fan and a rangers fan could actually agree about something? you hit the nail on the head….then hit it again just for good measure. i don’t hate him for his skill its his attitude and passifier that get on my nerves. well said dude

  25. Mike - Aug 29, 2010 at 11:12 AM

how exactly does he fight his own battles? he’ll slash and cross check true enough but actually fighting? are you serious? the only 2 “fights” he ever had he pulled some pee wee crap and pulled the other dudes jersey over his head and started slapping the back of their head. thats not a fight at all

  26. Haters Unite - Aug 29, 2010 at 12:21 PM

This is becoming a tiresome ploy to gain comments. I actually thought their could be no worse fans than Flyers fans. I was wrong; their are Red Wings fans and their constant whining about the losing to the Pens.

  27. JG - Aug 29, 2010 at 12:47 PM

    Thanks Pierre McGuire

  28. midranger - Aug 29, 2010 at 1:55 PM

If you have something to constructive/informative or even a reasonable opinion to contribute please do so because none either of you pseudo tough guys are ever going to meet up. So just stay in your Mother’s basement with your computer and stop all this wolfing!

  29. JG - Aug 29, 2010 at 2:44 PM

It is already well established that Sidney Crosby is the most over rated over hyped player today. My beef is that the league hardly cares about all of the other GREAT players playing today and they insist on this Crosby/Ovechkin thing. Really hockey fans could care less about these 2 guys as they know they are plenty of others better than these 2.

  30. NYRFTW - Aug 29, 2010 at 3:05 PM

I would like to thank the Flyers fans for agreeing with me on this. I know that we usually hate each other and talk endless junk, but we are both passionate fan bases that can’t have the wool pulled over our eyes. P.S. I know the Flyers currently have a much better team than we do and truth does hurt, but at least I can openly admit that because i’m not retarded. It’s the same for Crosby until he starts acting like a normal player people are going to call him out! As for Hockey Mike, well I dont need to say anything his low hockey iq comments speak for themselves!

  31. break away - Aug 29, 2010 at 3:45 PM

Horrible analogy! Biggest baby in the game today. Why not ask other players. They respect cindy because of his skills and that it…Kanes move so classless, but his class shows with his work and on ice ethics with other players!

  32. StakeX - Aug 29, 2010 at 4:01 PM

Well I’ll start out by saying I hate Crosby. Hes a whinny little punk, who spends more time complaining to the refs then he does actually playing. Not to mention if there was a Diver of the Year award, he’d win it hands down every year… and what makes me hate him more is the league won’t call him on it because hes their poster child. But perhaps what I hate the most about him is the leagues efforts to play him up as the second coming of Gretzky when he first entered the league… despite the fact that hes not even the top player in the NHL, or anything close to the player Gretzky was.
With that out of the way, he certainly has had his share of dirty plays. He likes the cheap shots, and only drops his gloves when the guy hes going after doesn’t expect it… so yes, I would call him someone who deffinatly makes dirty plays. But if hes a dirty player for anything, its again the fact that he dives and whines more then anything else he does. Theres a reason he is not very popular among NHL players… and diving and complaining on the ice will do that quicker then being a dirty player in the traditional sense.

  33. Nice - Aug 29, 2010 at 5:17 PM

Right you are, he will never be the next “Mario Lamoureux”, but he easily could be the next Mario Lemieux. What a great hockey mind you must be, you obviously are the definitive word on this subject.

  34. fahQ - Aug 29, 2010 at 6:16 PM

Kane beat up the cab driver, but it wasn’t on the ice.

  35. Reality! - Aug 29, 2010 at 8:17 PM

Feel free not to insult Mario with any comparison. Man vs Boy!

  36. HockeyMike - Aug 29, 2010 at 8:59 PM

Neo?? What is that like Neon or something- wow real cool dude. Let’s see, I played for 14 years through 2 years of college- what did you do except play hand hackey with yourself. Let me guess your a Flyer fan. I can usually pick them off right away due to their lack of intelligent commentary. Since we are talking about the Wings, mostly, I can say that Henrietta Zetterberg and Marian (no need to change name to the feminine) Hossa are 2 of the biggest pussy cheap shotters in the league. You missed my point, I didn’t say Sid doesn’t throw an occasional cheapshot- EVERYONE does. He just gets caught because he is followed by all eyes. And I did watch the games live you idiot and actually went to 2 of them. I am watching reruns on NHLN as a time killer.

    • drub1959 - Dec 6, 2010 at 6:05 PM

Hockey MIke, What games have you been watching that you have seen Zetterberg take any kind of cheap shot. Lot’s of players in the league should be taking notes as to handle yourself on and off the ice by watching the Red Wings. You don’t see them jumping into the glass everytime they score a goal or any of that BS that is so common on other teams. Most of the Red Wing players appear to be almost embarrassed when they score a goal. Lots of class from the top down. Oh and by the way Hockey Mike you sound like a has been.

  37. HockeyMike - Aug 29, 2010 at 9:17 PM

Again my Ranger fan, how does it feel to watch the finals each year knowing the Rangers don’t have a glimmer of hope of being there?? It must be awful to watch a team just sink like a ship each and every year. Thank god Sather is a Ranger! the good news for everyone else is, it looks like the Lightning will now be the 8th team in the Playoffs- The Rangers, well not so much.

  38. Dino - Aug 30, 2010 at 4:43 AM

I hope all you Crosby haters get killed in a car crash today. Ha!

  39. Fecteau - Aug 30, 2010 at 12:11 PM

Althought I agree that Crosby is a cheap player, not a dirty one, I had to mention that I actually thought Jagr was a huge baby. I remember a game in Hartford where he slashed Kevin Dineen in the wrist. Dineen turns around and does the same thing to where Jagr drops to his knees (probably a place he spent a lot of his time on) grabs his hands and whimpers and blubbers to the official. Jagr got a 2 minute minor for roughing, and Dineen got a 5 minute major, for the same penalty. So your argument about Crosby and Jagr being different is off…
Crosby was mentored by Lemieux, who was a complainer too. That’s why its in his blood… Its not a good thing, but its still something I noticed.

  40. jdm - Aug 30, 2010 at 12:44 PM

Wouldn’t it be great if we could send Crosby, Kovalchuk, and Bettman all to the KHL for a…… how about a loaf of bread and a goat!

  41. OutsiderlookingIn - Aug 30, 2010 at 2:17 PM

You know what Penguins fans, you are the most ignore and uninformed fans in the NHL. First let start off with cool Randy, you say that Detroit is a garbage hole, so what is Pittsburgh the toilet. Give me a break, I have been in both cities and some areas within your cities are nice while other sections I will never enter. That is just the harsh reality for large US cities.
Now on to the NHL guru HockeyMike, WOW, 14 years of hockey, including 2 in college, does that make you an expert? I don’t think so HM, After 14 years of playing hockey experience, rather than sitting around as you say “time killer” watching the highlights of the Penguins/Red Wings finals (some 2 years ago – past history dude), maybe you should get off your butt and become a coach for a inter-city youth hockey league. Use the experience of your talents and pass it along to other – if you can. I too have played hockey – 13 years a combination of in-house, Junior B and Junior A levels, but I knew there were so many others that were better than I and I was fine with that, so I decided to finish college, get my degree, work and for my leisure time, I am a hockey coach for an in-house leagues, coaching kids between 8-12 year olds the fundamentals of hockey, and believe me Cindy is not a idol of any of these kids.
Hey Dino, settle down boy, I did not forget about you. Nice comment you moron. It appears you have a mind of a Neanderthal, a cave man of the Stone Age era. I have a question for you Dino, are you sure you are not Fred and Wilma’s pet dinosaur? Go dig up bone and enjoy your life.

  42. LUKE - Aug 30, 2010 at 2:52 PM

Gretzky had Semenko watching his back. Crosby has Dupuis…Not even close to the same fear factor for the opposing team. Any time Crosby can get a little payback…he should go for it.

  43. Hank - Aug 30, 2010 at 3:22 PM

FYI: Ovechkin has more career diving penalties

  44. scott - Aug 30, 2010 at 5:27 PM

The comments from some fans are just plain ignorance! Sidney is not a dirty player! Of course alot comes from flyers fans but thats because sid destroys your team every chance he gets! He is hounded game in and game out but he is not a sissy like Gretzky! He had enough and started sticking up for himself! I have seen every game he has played and to see some idiots put him on top of the dirty list is just plain dumb! Cooke, Avery, Carcillo, Hartnell, Ruutu, and Pronger (but not like he use to be) are dirty players. The only list Sid needs to be on top of is Best player in the World!!!!

  45. scott - Aug 30, 2010 at 5:41 PM

Overhyped????? Probably so? No player will ever again put up the numbers that Lemieux or Gretzky did. The game has changed and all around the players are one million percent better. Numbers and accomplishment speak for themselves! Stanley cup, gold medal, MVP, Rocket, and art ross what could you want??? If your going to post then post from facts, not jealousy.

  46. StuckInDC - Aug 30, 2010 at 8:33 PM

You must be blind; Detroit is the biggest crap hole in America.

  47. StuckInDC - Aug 30, 2010 at 8:39 PM

You must be blind; Detroit is the biggest crap hole in America.

  48. HockeyMike - Aug 31, 2010 at 1:05 AM

…and the Rangers won the cup when??? and the Flyers won the cup when??? You were still crappin in your diapers last time either team won..Show me the ring turd head or keep your trap shut and stop being a pussy and trying to be all nicey nice with the Pumpkin heads. Ranger fans hate them just as much as we do.

  49. HockeyMike - Aug 31, 2010 at 1:14 AM

Outsider- before you try and call someone ignorant, check the spelling. It makes the user look well, ignorant. Secondly, you are obviously a complete fool or someone that stumbled across a hockey blog. I do coach 2 teams but I have lots of free time now because….IT ISN”T HOCKEY SEASON YET YOU MORON. I have plenty of time to watch rerun games right now because- see my last quote above!! Also-Detroit is the biggest dump in America,You cannot argue that point with anyone with a brain. Oakland and Newark may be close, but Detroit is by far the dump of the US.

  50. Hockey Mike - Aug 31, 2010 at 1:38 AM

Also- so you did get a degree. I commend you for that. I didn’t even know that Detroit offered a degree in the Custodial Arts. Let me ask a serious question though. What is really the best broom to use, natural straw or those plastic ones?
