I agree. If Kennedy signs with Detroit he would probably have a better shot at winning the cup now that Modano has a contract for the year. Plus the Wings might end up doing better with him. They already are close to winning the cup again anyways.

I believe they still get to keep the buyout no matter what. When Patrick Eaves signed with the Red Wings, part of the reason I’m sure he was able to accept less from Detroit than he might have otherwise was the buyout money he was already receiving.

Question for Joe or anybody who knows the answer:
If Kennedy (or any bought out player)were to sign somewhere else for more than the buyout, would he still get to keep his buyout free and clear, or will the sabers (or whomever) not have the pay the buyout, since the player signed somewhere else.
In Kennedy’s situation, he could sign somewhere else for $667,000, which has got to be somewhere close to the minimum (surely someone would take at at that price), and still make his $1,000,000. It seems as it might be a good deal for him. am I missing something?

The Sabres, as organizational policy, do not buy out ANYONE.
Just thought I’d throw that out there.
Pretty funny how the buyout amount is more than the difference between what the Sabres wanted him at and what he got…and they wonder why no one wants to play for them….
