This is silly. I hate the argument that "well if they sabres took the pics for Vanek, they'd have the first overall pick this year. BS. If the oilers get vanek, they're a better team, all of a sudden they'd have a franchise player to build around. If you're gonna fault Darcy for anything involving vanek, fault him for not giving him a true number 1 centre, not for keeping Vanek. If Regier let Vanek walk, it'd have been a dark dark day in the franchises history. What kind of team would we have been the next year? What kind of team would we be today? You cannot rely on draft picks to have a successful team, there is so much uncertainty involved in whoever comes out of the draft, no matter where you pick them from. In Vanek we know that we have someone who has the potential to score 40 a year. Is he as skilled as a Kovalchuk, or a Crosby, or an Ovechkin? no, but he makes this team better. The idea that Regier should have taken the picks is silly and it would've been a dumb choice for Darcy

Here we go again....
Edmonton would have NOT finished last in the league with Vanek.
What would have their future REALLY been like if they didn't match? Hamilton, Ontario. The Sabres fan base was already on the brink of revolt. Losing Vanek would have certainly meant a full on riot and possibly boycott. That's not a joke either.
