I agree. Cocaine and alcohol abuse further weakened his heart. I’m not sure if maintained that party animal lifestyle post hockey days but maybe the damage was alreadty done.

I’m leaning towards juice. Steroids. Not a leap in my mind. I have used anabolics/androgens and they were “great” for their purpose.
What today’s youth and athletes need to know – may not be to not use this stuff per se – but what to be aware of – atherosclerosis as an example – later in their lives and to consider specific tests like echocardiograms of the heart and arteries.
It is a shame to see an athlete – the epitomy of health and fitness – drop dead like Bob did! But when you are aware of what they often use to be the best they can – and I would argue it is not their fault – you can better see some issues.

Bob spent a long week-end in Cadillac in 1988. I saw him enter a sporting goods store across the street from my office. I asked him if he would stop in and sign a banner that I received at the home opener the year prior…I added, “I know that people like me make your life miserable, and if you don’t do these things, I will understand and always be a fan”. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Dan, I will be glad to come over. Do you think I would be making the money I make and get to PLAY for a living if it wasn’t for people like you??” He came over and totally charmed the ladies and signed for everyone. A real class act in spite of that awful illness he possessed. RIP, Bob, and prayers to your loving family.

Probert was the toughest enforcer the nhl has seen. I think there’s a major element in it of fairness. He dealt it out when the other team needed it but not recklessly. Prayers to the family.

Lets not forget his problems with alcohol and cocaine in the past. Both can do a lot of damage to the heart.
