2010 NHL Free Agency: Flyers surprisingly give Jody Shelley 3-year, $3.3M contract

Jul 1, 2010, 2:31 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers signed rugged forward Jody Shelley to a stunning three-year, $3.3 million deal according to Bob McKenzie. Uh, what?

Look, I know the Flyers enjoy living in the stone age at times, re-living their Broad Street Bullies days over and over again. Shelley won’t bring many (if any) points to the table, so you know why the Flyers signed him: for carnage.

When you look at Derek Boogaard failing to sign with the Minnesota Wild, Donald Brashear making his way to the Rangers doghouse and Georges Laraque’s buyout in Montreal, all signs point to enforcers being marginalized. Even if the Flyers decided they wanted to keep that imposing element, why did they pay Shelley so much … and for three years?

I don’t get it, but I guess the Flyers really want to hold true to their traditional image of bruising and bullying opponents. (And, apparently, their own wallets.)

I love it! I hate the Flyers and was delighted to see their stupid “tradition” of asinine, undisciplined play do them in in the Finals (thanks, Prong!). Apparently, Laviolette has no influence on who they sign, because his Carolina teams were the most disciplined in the NHL and Jody Shelley is just a goon, period. I hope this means Philly is going right back into the gutter from whence it came. Until the caveman idiocy leaves that front office, the Flyers can rot.

Very nice guy off the ice, but doesn’t contribute anything on it…. And will lose almost every fight he gets in. Gotta like a guy who drops the gloves anyway though.

What the hell was Holmgren thinking? I watched Shelley in his years with the Columbus Blue Jackets and he was pathetic. He wasn’t smart enough to know when to play hockey and when to be an enforcer. The best thing he ever did was play punching bag for Todd Fedoruk in a game in Columbus. I loved watching Shelley get his ass kicked. It won’t be long before he is a healthy scratch day after day because Laviolette doesn’t like his stupidity.

Back to the gutter, they were in the gutter for one season you moron. I’m from Philly and yes i dont like this signing at all, but rgardless we’re still gonna go back to the finals if not just because we have the best defensive corps in the NHL, but also because the flyers have good veteran leadership, and great young stars who started to emerge in the playoffs.

Josh – you are such a DB. You hate the Flyers….who cares? Did you enjoy watching them play for the cup while your team was already golfing. Of all Flyer teams, nobody expected them to reach the cup and they did. Suck a fat one.

Haha I guess the stanley cup finals are the gutter. You obviously are clueless about hockey. I think the signing is rediculously stupid, but the flyers are one of the best teams in the NHL, and will be for a long time. Read up and actuallt watch hockey before you make retarded comments about anything. I cant stand people who are clueless, but fa comes around and everybody is a fan/analyst.
