I’m always glad to see some ‘Canes news on here, so thanks for this update on Whitney. Here’s my take: Jim Rutherford always says he’s “leaving the door open” to every player the Hurricanes let go of – in fact, just today he also said it about the RFAs (including Brett Carson…ouch) they didn’t make qualifying offers to: http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=533106&navid=DL|CAR|home
Really, he literally says this every time he lets a player go. And it works: Many players who were once ‘Canes return to the team later on, it’s just that Whitney, who is awesome by the way, is too old to come back for a second tour and also it just so happens that Carolina has a lot of good options at wing this year. Young guys they’ve developed, nobody to get excited about (ironical tomfoolery alert: somebody who writes for this blog thinks Carolina is a stagnant, regressive organization – obviously fans disagree). I honestly don’t think anyone with the Hurricanes hopes Whitney comes back; for what they’d pay him they can get a desperately-needed D-man or set something aside for the trade deadline. If Ray gets nothing but crickets on the market, of course they’d have him back, but he’s 37 and the team is trying to get younger and has, as I said, a batch of young forwards who have done their time in the AHL and deserve a shot. I’ll still be wearing my #13 Wizard jersey to games this year.
