Hmmmm...Neil & I are not watching the same Red Wings. I see them enjoying the game play (and saying in interviews they do). Isn't concentrating on the play part of playing well, not just trying not to make a mistake (which also seems like a good play strategy).
As far as "system" goes, EVERY team has one--all players that are interviewed from every team say "we just have to stick to our plan", or "our game."
In MY nutshell, I don't see Babcock as micro-managing the team, but I do see him moving players around to see which players work the best together, and giving them all a chance to develop their personal strengths.
Babcock is a great coach and the players seem to like him and his style of coaching. He is good for the team and Detroit. Hope he stays around a long time!

The wings have always played a team "system'and that is what they do---play the system! Babcock is as close to Scotty as we will see in this league---maybee the wings would rather have Joel Quinville??? Another old NHL defencemen who took too many pucks to the head!

Extension thru 2011 at most. Babcock is a teaching coach with a system and is heavy handed on his discipline. The Red Wings appear to be robotic in their play with little opening for their personal strengths - at times the best players look the same as the reserves. They don't look like they are really playing as if they enjoy themselves but more like concentrating on not making a mistake as if they will be admonished. In a nutshell, they look like they are being micro-managed. Babcock needs to adjust his style of coaching.
