Jeff, are you ever beaten up or belittled in ANY way for being straight? I didn’t think so…..as for bob and ash…..boo to you…..I am a straight female that was at the parade. I was there to support my nephew and anyone else. I have NEVER seen such love and acceptance as I did at that parade. They did not hate. They did not judge. I was a supporter BEFORE my nephew came out….I support everyone’s individuality. It does not make them freaks, or something to be afraid of….. Those afraid, are in reality, possibly homosexuals themselves and just afraid of coming out. I commend Sopel for his support. It is honorable and speaks great volumes to his character….too bad some of the people on this thread cannot say the same for themselves…..

For the record, Sopel did this as a tribute to a friend of his that was gay and recently passed away. They attend PRIDE in his honor every year, and this year they did it with Lord Stanley in tow. Props to Sopel for standing up for his beliefs. Let the bigots and small minded individuals like Bob up there think what he wants. They are going to be small minded for the rest of their lives until they open their own eyes and see the nature of the world today.

I watched an interview with 3 canaidian jr. hockey teams G.M’s. they were asked if they ever had or have any gay players on thier teams that they kept on the low key. They all answered YES! and i know as a fact of two to have played in the NHL and one of them was a 50 Goal scorer and won the stanley cup. Pro-sports like anything emilates society, so there’s alot of gays playin pro-sport. One of them could be a hero of yours, ewwwwww! big deal ! America talks a good talk about freedom and tolerance!! Time to step up to the plate so to speak and do whats right like the Sopel’s!!!!!!

I saw part of the parade because I was visiting the neighborhood as my son and his wife live just off Diversey and Clark. I thought the parade was great. I thought the involvement of many straight people was great. Brent Sopel isn’t gay, nor is Ernie Banks, who was on the Cubs float.
People don’t choose to be gay, they are probably born that way. Would you choose to be in a minority that a lot of people ostracize? I mean it’s no different than saying you chose to be black in our country. Who in their right mind would want to make life more frigging difficult than it already is? So if they are human beings and didn’t choose it, just accept that they are different than you are and go on with life. If you don’t know any gays or blacks, your life is not as rich as it otherwise could be.
I had lived in Chicago for over 50 years and never attended it, because I was sure it would be a turnoff to me. It wasn’t, although there was some weirdness I expected. It wasn’t until Sunday, when I was there, that I got the fact that this is a huge deal for them to feel acceptance on that day. Nobody should try to diminish that. Leave them alone if you can’t say something positive, because you are only showing your disconnection from your fellow humans.

I am a fag (as in, I’m a gay man on the effete side of things who self-identifies as a fag — not every effete-ish gay man does, ymmv, don’t call people words with offensive histories even in a reclamatory sense unless you’ve talked to them first, /disclaimer) and though I didn’t go to the parade, you don’t really have a right to tell people that the people at the parade are giving anybody a bad name. Most Queer people have to stay at least somewhat private (vs straight people, who are free to talk about their s.o. without playing the pronoun game, free to hold their hand or kiss them wherever, bring them home to meet the family, so on) to keep themselves safe, and there is pretty much one time a year* where we don’t have to feel that way, and that day is pride. Sure, some of us celebrate it by getting amazingly drunk, but that’s what most people do when, say, their teams win the Stanley cup.
But seriously, if you’re going to be a bigot don’t act like you’re being reasonable and only hating on “the fags”. In a political/historical sense? All LGBTQ people are “fags”, and hating just the flamers is the same as hating all of us.
*NB — and this really only applies to large cities in liberal areas. In some other countries (and even in some other states) people are putting themselves in serious danger by attending pride. I know people who, every year, redraft their wills right before pride in case something bad happens to them while they’re there.

Jeff you do have a straight parade 365 days a year. the purpose jeff or as i saw the pride parade is as a gay person you don’t feel so alone and different. Its a horrible feeling jeff. I never wanted to be gay and you’ll just have to trust me on this bud I never had a choice. And anything you see on the front page of some news paper or T.v. show doesn’t represent everybody. What you learn there is that theres all kinds of different people that make up ANY community. I love seeing at pride in Toronto all the young straight couples coming down to dance and have fun with all of us.By the way being Canadian, hockey is in my Blood and i come from a Hockey family.
