Since the Canucks braintrust can't draft anyone of any consequence why not trade for Ballard? Just because he took a while to get to the NHL and was a marginal player in Phoenix and Florida doesn't mean he won't be able to challenge say Andrew Alberts for a position on the Canucks defense. He should be in the Canucks top six but that may be faint praise in that generally rag tag bunch.
I think the real loss is obviously Grabner. Tallon being a good d-man and hockey mind (ie witness the Chicago draft for the past few years)sized up Ballard quickly and made an excellent deal for a speed and goal scorer and a reasonable journeyman plus futures.
My hopes for a future trade is Gillis for Tallon.

Alright so to the person whos says Grabner is not an amazing player is plain flat out wrong, he has not been given the chance to shine. I was fortunate to watch him play for a few years for Spokane, and I have played with him in a scrap game at the local sheet of ice, he is an amazing player.

I'm in opposition to the previous comment, because as a long time Vancouverite and Canucks Fan, I feel the Canucks draft TERRIBLY anyway. Bernier NEEDED to be dumped, and Grabner isn't a spectacular player. Was his immediate impact going pointless for double digit droughts and breaking his ankle in a pre-game soccer match? Keith Ballard was a 1st round pick (11th overall), and Vancouver is starving for any talent on the back end. and BTW, he out pointed Kevin Bieksa by 6 last season. Why the hate? Cuz he smashed Vokoun's head?
Also, Oreskovich is a player who has potential to be a scorer with some time on the Moose. Good trade imo, Canucks can't draft.

I cannot believe Canucks actually did this trade.
Ballard is nothing spectacular and it would be questionable trading a 1st round pick for him. I understand dumping Steve Bernier, so maybe that is why the Canucks overpaid in order to get rid of him, but Grabner? Are you kidding me?
Canucks fans have been patiently waiting for him to do something and finally he gets a bit of an opportunity to showcase his stuff at the pro level and makes an immediate impact! Then they trade him. For Keith Ballard. At least trade him and a 1st round pick for the rights to negotiate with Dan Hamius. But Keith Ballard?
He is going to get eaten up by the Vancouver fans and media. First terrible trade of Gillis' tenure.
