The Vancouver Canucks defense - and on some level, the entire team - was in disarray by Game 6 of their semifinal feud with the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2010 playoffs. Injuries caused some issues, particularly with shutdown guy Willie Mitchell. The team hopes to bolster its depth by retaining journeyman defenseman Aaron Rome for two more years. (Source: TSN)

The 26-year old Rome, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, played 49 games with the Canucks this season, registering four assists. He also took part in one playoff game.

Rome averaged about 15 minutes of ice time when he did manage to crack the Canucks roster. He didn’t spend much time killing penalties (less than a minute per game) or on the powerplay (less than 30 seconds per game). His plus/minus rating was -2.

The signing allows Vancouver to focus on their forward ranks, with their defense and goalies more or less covered. Rome isn’t a world-beater, but could be a bottom pairing or reserve defenseman for a team that deals with its fair share of bruises and injuries.
