Forget 'Cindy' Crosby, now we have 'Chrissy' Pronger …

Jun 8, 2010, 4:05 PM EST

First*, there was “Cindy” Crosby. Now, the Chicago Tribune presents the latest hockey makeover(?): “Chrissy” Pronger.

* – OK, that’s definitely NOT the first case of an athlete’s name being “feminized” but work with me here, folks.

If you have an aversion to clicking, the link above captures a Photoshop job by the newspaper that superimposes the legs of a figure skater (one would assume) wearing an orange skirt onto the body of the towering Philadelphia Flyers defenseman. There’s also the classy on-liner “Looks like Tarzan, skates like Jane.”

Wow. Frankly, this is the kind of thing you’d expect to come out of someone’s mother’s basement, right? Obviously, the newspaper is far from serious about the poster. There’s even a little “info graphic” that includes “100%: Chance we’ll change our minds if the Hawks sign him.”

All elbowing aside, while the joke is a bit lacking imagination-wise, it’s a ludicrously amusing image and it will be surreal to see it held up at the United Center if the series reaches a Game 7. If nothing else, this strange decision shows just how hockey-crazed the city of Chicago is right now.

Regardless of what Richard Roeper says.

    of course chicago is hockey crazed they are winning. that bandwagon must be overflowing. i would like to see how “hockey crazed” they are when they have their next losing season. as far as the girly comments, i would think all of the whining and crying about the calls from chicago would have them playing golf from the forward tees. waaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh
    after the cup finals, chicago can go back to watching the real housewives of whatever or the lifetime movie of the week.
    PS i did not realize tough guys beat up cab drivers with help (Kane)! i guess chicago tough and real tough are two different things.

    This kind of reporting is probably why the Tribune is in bankruptcy.

    @Cleveland Brown
    Love the broad attack on Chicago fans. Oh by the way I don’t think you should be talking as you are from the great city of Cleveland. Last time I checked nothing great has come from that city so I could understand why you would know so much about the Lifetime Channel with all the viewing you must partake in.

    I am from Chicago and I love Blackhawks hockey. I do not love this poster for a number of reasons: 1. I’d like to focus on the actual games. 2. We don’t need this kind of attack on another player to prove we’re a better hockey team. 3. I don’t believe in picking on opposing players and giving them incentive to play harder/better/stronger. Pronger is clearly an excellent hockey player – one you either love (if he’s on your team) or hate (if he’s not on your team). The Blackhawks don’t need to resort to this type of ribbing of the other team. All they need to do is play their brand of hockey and they will bring the Cup home.
    BTW @ClevelandBrown – The city of Chicago loves Blackhawks hockey and always has. This city has proven to be true sports fans through good and bad. Admittedly there have been some bad years recently for Hawks fans but that all changed now that Mr. Wirtz is no longer in charge and the Hawks are fun to watch again. Spend some time talking to true Blackhawks fans and they will provide you with a long list of what’s great about this team (past and present) and how things have turned around significantly in the last few years. I guarantee that the hype is not just about possibly winning the Cup this year but about a team that has re-embraced the city that loves it so much. Fans will be tuning in again in future years even when they are not playing as well as they are now simply because the new leadership figured out how to re-engage with the true hockey fans of this city.

    I believe the Hawks will carry the cup tonight but I wish they would bring #6 (Hendry) back. We miss him :( Go HAWKS!

    I realize now that Ed O. is not a colorman, he is outwardly rooting for the Hawks. From telling us how when a Flyer comes wiyhin a foot of a Hawk, he wants a penalty, to telling us how skilled the Hawks are when they score, to telling us the Flyers goals are all darc\bage defkections, etc. He said the last Flyer goal deflected off TWO Hawls, when Hartnall put it in. SHADDUP ED. YOU SUCK.

    One word comes to mind, tasteless. For all the criticism Philly fans receive, this shows a complete lack of class from a major media outlet which represents the entire city of Chicago. At least when something happens in Philly, it is usually isolated to a single fan or a small group of fans, not a representation of the entire city. You can keep the Cup while we keep our class.
