Ray Whitney named captain of Team Canada

May 12, 2010, 11:30 AM EDT

Ray Whitney, the grizzled veteran on a team full of youngsters, has
been handed the captaincy of Team Canada in the wake of Ryan Smyth’s
fractured ankle.

Whitney was the logical choice after Smyth went
down with the injury, even if it’s not a role he’s normally taken during
his hockey career. Perhaps it was more out of process of elimination as
Whitney is suddenly the most experienced player on the team — by far.

Per
the Canadian Press:

“He’s still with us, we still think about him,” said Whitney. “As for
the captaincy, I think they could have went to any of the four
[alternate captains -- Steven Stamkos, Corey Perry Francois Beauchemin
and Whitney]. You could have picked a lot of guys.

“Maybe it’s because I am the oldest that it fell my way.”

It’s RAY WHITNEY of the Carolina Hurricanes. You’ve got the wrong name and the wrong photo.

Thanks for correcting it so fast.

Yeah, he’s not one to normally take leadership positions during his career, seeing as how he wears the ‘A’ for the Hurricanes and all.

ha u had American “Ryan” Whitney in the headline and photo? Well done.

Yeah, I wonder why the Canes keep Whitney around. You know, with his lack of leadership and puck handling skills and all:

If you hang on to the end, you can see that Brandon thinks so too. “Wow” he says, “I scored due to the process of elimination”
