Savard has had enough with Mike Richards

May 11, 2010, 12:40 PM EDT

Savard6.jpgIt took nearly 55 minutes, but the Boston Bruins finally showed some
emotion in last night’s game against the Flyers. Unfortunately, at that
point the Bruins were down 4-0 and already it was inevitable that the
series was headed back to Philadelphia for a Game 6.

At the heart
of the festivities between the two teams at the end of the game was Marc
Savard and Mike Richards. Savard has seemingly had enough with
Richards’ antics, who has gone out of his way to agitate the Bruins with
his physicality and big hits. Knocking David Kejci out in Game 3 didn’t
help, and then Savard constantly being checked into the boards became
the last straw before the emotional player had enough.

From
Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com:

“I was just facing the boards again, and enough is enough of that,”
said Savard in the Bruins dressing room following the game. “It’s a
reaction. Part of hockey, I guess.

“I just got fired up. Like I got hit the other night in Philly from
behind, and then I was facing the glass again in the same situation
[tonight]. And I look back at [the hit on Krejci] and enough is enough. I
don’t know that’s all.”

Like the Vancouver Canucks, the Bruins need to find a way to channel
this anger and frustration into some solid play on the ice. While Savard
and the Bruins worry about what Richards is doing, the Flyers have
controlled play and taken all the momentum of the series.

I don’t normally comment here but watching the game last night, it seemed that once the Bruins went down 4-0, they just started trying to take Flyers out of the game. Richards hit wasn’t illegal. Savard had his head down along the boards and had control of the puck. For Savard to come back and cross-check Richards in the face was absolutely ridiculous and should have warranted way more than a 2-minute minor (especially since Richards was bleeding). And for Lucic to step in and start swinging and not have a penalty called on him was astounding. I would have thought that Savard would practice what he preaches regarding head shots after his injury. Richards is a big, physical forward and has a long memory. Expect him to make an impact once again in game 6.

  2. Bostonisgeigh - May 11, 2010 at 2:53 PM

Savard is such a cry baby…I hope they put him out for another 6 weeks tomorrow night. You were 10 feet from the boards when you got hit from behind last night. It’s like you said Savard “it’s part of hockey”

  3. horsepucky - May 11, 2010 at 2:55 PM

The hit that richards made on savard was just as illegal as the one that was called for boarding just a short time before. the Bruins did not want this game, but the officiating was extremely one sided. All you need to do to figure out the flyer’s game plan is look at the visors. I only saw one on the flyers without one but they like to play chippy and then turtle. The bruins players that play that way don’t. I also heard that Laviolette will be coaching the US diving team this summer

  4. roscopcoultrane - May 11, 2010 at 3:01 PM

and this my friends is why Boston is falling apart. Their main threat is crying about being checked instead of focusing on the big picture…WINNING ONE GAME TO WIN THE SERIES! Richards 1 Savard 0. Exactly what the Flyers are trying to do, get the Bruins off their game. And Savard just for an FYI – the Krejci hit was 1,000,000% legal. Read the rule book sometime scrub. Flyers in 7

  5. Bud - May 11, 2010 at 3:10 PM

Are you serious, which series have you been watching? The Celtics or the Bruins. As a fan of neither team you can see the Flyers seizing the momentum and putting all of the pressure of the next two games on the Bruins. The question will be how they respond, what will be your comments if the B’s choke and lose the series. Keep in mind that if not too rusty, the BETTER of the Flyers back-up goalies is now playing. Mike Richards is a good hockey player that I am sure 29 other teams including the Bruins would love to hav on their team. The officiating had nothing to do with it, the Bruins I am sure did not want to go back to Philly but played like they were supposed to win just because they were up 3 to 1. Once again, watch the game dude, they were totally outplayed, the Flyers game plan seems to be to win the next two games and they just might. You also failed to mention the hit on Giroux, which was about identical to Richards hit on Savard or was your cable out then??

  6. Tom R. - May 11, 2010 at 3:26 PM

Lol what will be our comments if the Bruins choke? It’s been over 10 years since the last time they went to the finals and they lost both times simultaneously. And 30 since we’ve seen a cup. Not to mention last years disappointing elimination. If being a Bruin’s fan has taught us anything, it’s that we are used to losing, but we still love our team, even if they are frustrating to watch some games. As far as Savard beating on Richards? Best part of the game. They’ve been man handling him all series. They choked him one game. That toothless flyers freak had his little skirmish, and then the Richards hit was a bit extreme. And don’t whine that he “made him bleed” and then preach about hockey being a rough sport. btw both Lucic and Savard went to the box on that penalty. If the Flyers pull off the series win then so be it. But it’s not gonna happen. Last thought, B’s last night were embarrassing, pick it up in game 6!

  7. Bud - May 11, 2010 at 3:43 PM

Why wouldn’t Savard man up on Richards one on one? Did you also miss the hit on Giroux? Same hit, different color jersey delivering it. Love your passion as a fan though, just a hockey fan enjoying a good series with potential to become great, give the Flyers credit for not giving up and fighting through injuries just like the Bruins are doing. btw Lucic should have been thrown out for 3rd man in but they don’t seem to call that in the playoffs, do they???

  8. Bill - May 11, 2010 at 3:44 PM

It’s hard to ever expect any intelligent commments about hockey in the playoffs when it’s obvious that Philly fans and Bruins fans will think differently about every call. I am a Boston fan and have been my whole life (Bruins season ticket holder) and Bruins fans suck (never heard of worse Fair weather fans anywhere), There was no reason to boo your team as they came out for the thrid period in the playoffs. Booing at the end of a game I can understand, though I will never do it. But the third period hadn’t started and there was still a chance (however remote it was). Cheer louder to pick your team up.
What really got me going was when I overheard the guy behind me saying he hadn’t seen the Bruins play this bad in years. I asked him when was the last time he saw them play and he said last years game 7. Aparently he missed their games in February and March. Such a typical Boston fan. Know everything about all sports and wait for the playoffs to show up and talk nonsense. To whatever your name was, you are the reason I am fed up with Boston fans. Yes they sucked, It wasn’t the refs fault, they just played BAD! Teams have bad games. Hopefully they can bounce back and win 1 of 2 games.
Also it’s playoff hockey, guys hit eachother get injured and keep playing. Occasionally there are cheap shots. You then fight the guy. What is new there. Also if you are losing and you want to get momentum back you start a fight. Lucic and Savard were trying to send a message for next game (that is if they can back it up next game). If not back to Boston for more ignorant hockey fans…

  9. Dave S - May 11, 2010 at 4:09 PM

Comparing the Savard and Giroux hits is absurd. There is no comparison whatsoever. Someone throwing their body at someone’s head at the boards isn’t the same as a push to the back 6 feet from the boards. The respect (or lack there of) that players show for one another is horrendous.
I like the reference to 3rd man in. I would question whether that penalty has been called in the past 5 years. Playoffs or regular season. Used to be a pretty simple call. 2 vs. 1 = 3.
It is fun to see this become a series, but I can’t imagine the Flyers throwing up two more wins. These teams are so evenly matched that the B’s have to pull one out. I just hope the Bruins fans come up small again if it gets to a game 7.
Booing constantly since the score got to 2-0. Way to show up!

  10. Frank - May 11, 2010 at 5:42 PM

I couldn’t agree with you more, Bill. I’m not a Bruins fan, but I am a die hard Flyers fan, and even though I don’t have season tickets (I live about 120 miles from Philly) I still make it up there for about 5 or 6 games a year and I ALWAYS get stuck in front of the fan that knows everything but you can tell that this is probably the first game they’ve ever seen. I live in the DC area though, and I can’t imagine any team having more of a fair weather fan base than the Caps.

  11. Frank - May 11, 2010 at 5:48 PM

There is no one on the Bruins that can handle that “toothless flyers freak” including that big oaf Chara. Savard beating on Richards? If you’re that little love tap he gave him with the butt of the stick behind the net, than yea, he really beat on him. maybe you’re one of the Boston fans that Bud was referring to and you haven’t watched the series. No one on that team has manhandled anyone on the Flyers, especially Richards. Just ask Krejci.

  12. mike m1166 - May 11, 2010 at 7:08 PM

horsedumby, what game were you watching? what team are you watching? you’re going to imply the flyers are wimps because they wear visors? flyers we’re one of the leaders in the league in fighting majors. also, the savard hit? give me a break. he pushed him from behind. if savard is and i quote, “tired of richard antics” he should do something about it. has savard won a fight in his nhl career? i know richards has won a lot more then he lost. at the end of the day, bruins are going to choke again and be out fishing by the break of dawn on saturday morning.

  13. Flyers suck - May 11, 2010 at 10:48 PM

Richards better keep his head on a swivel the next game or two. His hit on David Booth earlier was borderline dirty and his hit on David Krejci, though clean, shows a disregard for other players in the league. Payback can be a b…h!!

  14. jim huckey - May 11, 2010 at 11:05 PM

dumdys,, bean town cryers,,it was ok when they were up 3 games to none now all the bean town babys come out, tell your team to play and stop all the crap shots, and play the game, idiots,,,did you hear any the flyers fans crying no ., not at all
    ,,cry babys

  15. Dale - May 12, 2010 at 12:52 PM

Yeah the flyer have been pretty quite the whole series. In fact the last game half the fans left early in third period. Way to support your team!!

  16. mp - May 12, 2010 at 1:12 PM

I’m a Bruins fan and have been for nearly 40 years(a real fan, not just a bandwagon fan) and I hate the Flyers almost as much as I hate the Canadiens. Actually just about the same. They are perennially a dirty, chippy team and their fans are borderline criminals (all Philly teams fans, actually). That being said, the Flyers deserved to win the last 2 games. They earned those victories. They worked much harder, skated much faster and were simply more determined to win in those games. Can you believe the play where Wideman broke his stick and just tried to get in Gagne’s way?? How about skating to the puck and slapping it across the ice so the trailing defenseman (Hunwick, I think) could get to it first?? What’s the worst that could have happened? A faceoff for an illegal hand pass outside of the defensive zone? It’s plays like these that are making the Bruins lose these games. They have reverted back to the way they played in their 10 game losing streak. I still believe the Bruins will win tonight in game 6, as long as they bring it to the Flyers and don’t let up.

  17. mp - May 12, 2010 at 1:19 PM

Yeah, maybe Richards can put him out for another 6 weeks. He has a knack for distributing dirty hits. Just ask David Booth. But I suppose all you Flyers fans thought that hit on Booth was clean, too?

  18. 60eagles - May 12, 2010 at 4:50 PM

Nice Reply Bill. I am a big Flyers fan but I now respect you. I wish the hell you were a Flyers fan. We have the same type in Philly as you have in Beantown. If we lose we didn’t deserve to win the series after 3 straight trouncing. GO FLYERS. Remember Bobby Clarke, Reggie Leach, Dave Schultz, Gary Dornhoefer, Bernie Perant and Fred Shero. My, my…such a long time ago and no Lord Stanley since. Bust as a Flyers fan, I must say that the Bruins suck. (LOL)

  19. Tom R. - May 12, 2010 at 7:13 PM

I don’t know that Bill was referring to me … I didn’t say anything bad about the Bruins aside from pointing out that Bruins fans are used to disappointing losses, in which case (in reference to someone saying “what will bruins fans do if they choke?)its not gonna keep real Bruin’s fans from loving their team any less just because they don’t make it to the next round. I’ve never booed nor gave up watching just because they were losing, why would you with the way they handled the Sabres in third periods. My family is full of Bruins fans and I haven’t even been alive long enough to see them play in the Stanley Cup finals, and I still watch every game from Phoenix, AZ. But that’s enough justification on my part. I’m not gonna bother getting into a debate with you over defining “beating on” vs “love taps” that’s feeble … I forget that I need to dumb down dialogue when talking to sports fans so I don’t have to listen to people getting caught up on linguistics. As far as defending Carcillo, the guy is a jerk and that’s fact. And whether or not you think anyone on the B’s could take him, is entirely irrelevant and a waste of time. Game 6 in 47 min. Hopefully Flyers will be out, and the Pens and Pennsylvania can have their tears lull them to sleep tonight.

  20. schiver - May 13, 2010 at 12:53 PM

“Disregard for other players in the league”?
What is that even supposed to mean? You just said yourself that it was a clean hit. How is making a clean hit on someone having disregard for other players? It’s the playoffs. All bets are off. And I was right, Richards did make an impact in game 6 and he likely will in game 7 as well. Just try to stop him.

  21. guyd - May 14, 2010 at 8:46 PM

after mike richards’ dirty hits on booth, his taking out of krecji in a questionably dirty hit and the dozens of other major trangressions this asshole has perpetrated against skill players in the nhl, it is my fervent wish that this prick be taken out with a very hasty hit to put him out of action for about a year. Perhaps then and only then, will players of his ilk get the message, live by the dirty hit, get taken out by the dirty hit.

  22. hoover - May 16, 2010 at 5:30 AM

hey if all you guys out there who are complaning about hit being dirty or not, it all part of the game dirty or not!! If you want to watch or play a nice game you should play tennis!!!
