Come on- who is shocked here? If you have ever been to a Caps game, you know that they do not win with grace, but with drunken insults and the verge of violence. Who thinks they would lose with grace?

The Capitals were not built or play a style that is conducive to winning in the playoffs. Yes they have some fantastic hockey players in the likes of Ovechkin, Knuble and company. But their style is one of selfishness, lacks passing, giving up the body to block shots, body checks and crashing the net to get rebounds. Also...where was the killer instinct. When a team is down...put them away. Play each game like it is the only one until the final period ends. They did not play like that in the series. Lastly..Boudreaux did not coach this team well in the playoffs. Why start crashing the net in the 3rd period of the 7th game? Why not change your tactics before it becomes a game of desperation? I am a HUGE PENS fan and what distinguishes champions from losers is consistent emotional balance, good coaching, teamwork and that killer instinct. Capitals had none of that. Ovechkin should learn from this experience...you need to be a true leader and PASS! Make your players around you better. One player cannot carry an entire team. GO PENS and congrats to the HABS for playing an amazing series.

I'll have to say, it really seemed like the Caps (mostly Ovechkin) started playing every man for himself - especially in the 3rd period. During the 2nd intermission Knuble even mentioned that it is a team effort, and that they had to work *together* to get the puck into the net. When the 3rd period started, that just didn't happen. Sure, they DID get the puck into the net, although it was disallowed (another conversation entirely), but they surely did not work together. Watching Ovechkin is like watching Shaq: they put up a ton of points, but aren't really much fun to watch.

To be fair, that's only the 2nd time they've ever seen their team fail. The first time was LAST YEAR in Game 7 against the Penguins.
I can hear the bandwagon emptying from here!

I have three words for the Washington Capitals Brass: "TRADE MIKE GREEN!!!!!!!" Even if its for a stick of gum... But try to get a player that's sound defensively and can give youngsters Carlson and Alzner some extra tips to be even better. Remember, Chris Pronger wouldn't be Chris Pronger if he never got traded from the Whalers to the Blues, as he had Al MacInnis to show him the ropes.
Back to Green, the guy was responsible for game 1 loss, and both goals in the games 7. Do the math, if one of those losses were a win, the Caps would be playing the Flyers in a few days.
Kudos to John Carlson who, despite not playing the entire regular season, played like a 10 year veteran on the blue line. Was anyone else very frustrated in the 3rd when he was breaking through the D but someone either whacked or pulled his stick out of his hands as he rushed Halak? That should have been a penalty.
Anyone else feel like I do about the decision to empty the net off the faceoff of the power play at the end of the game? If they didn't, then the Canadians wouldn't have had the ability to keep icing the puck without a whistle, and guess what, the Habs know that the Caps can't score goals when the puck is 30 feet in the air (lest a high stick call would most likely ensue) Although I understand his technique, Boudreau should have kept Varly in net until they had the offensive zone. They would have still had a chance, especially since the Caps finally figured out how to finally crash the net. Sounding like the typical Red Sox fan that Ive been since 1987...There's always next year. Hopefully the decision makers really realize that defense and solid goaltending (that with Theo and Varly they can have with good D) is what wins championships, not solely having a Crosby-esque or Zetterberg and Datsyuk combo... Its called a TEAM sport for a reason...

Historically, the Capitals have gagged on their own choke. The Pens have had a hand in constanty wiping them out, going back to the Mario-era. Good stuff....for a Pens fan. Ha!
Even if the Canadians eliminate the Penguins, they still would have gone further than the Capitals.

The caps fans are an absolute joke, bunch of bandwagon transplant clueless people in red. I couldnt believe my eyes last night, giving ovechkin and co. a STANDING ovation as they left the ice, ovechkin holding his stick up and waving goodbye to everyone. Are you kidding me? What are you applauding? They last a week 1/2 later than the edmonton oilers. They are a complete joke. They made all these moves at the deadline and still choked and still didnt have what it took. Everyone wondered why in 94 neil smith traded amonte, weight etc and brought in veterans, but thats what you need when you want to win it all. The fans in washington are the biggest joke, I have never seen anything like that, blowing a 3-1 lead in the first rd to an 8 seed and then ovechkin saluting the crowd to a standing O.
Get a clue.

If the fans in Philly or New York threw a cowbell of a bottle of Crown Royal, we'd be hearing ad nauseum about it. But let's not tar the entire Caps fanbase for the actions of a few. It was cool to see the city so excited about hockey. I hope the disappointment doesn't kill the newfound love for hockey and the excitement they generated.

Ahh yes, welcome to "hockey fan hell"
Being the best team all season and folding in the playoffs.
Maybe it's the curse of the presidents trophy, maybe they just ran into a hot goaltender, but either way the caps fans hearts are crushed.
Now everyone in red from last night knows EXACTLY how every single sharks fan felt last year. Nobody had sympathy for us, maybe now we will get some love.
Have fun hating your team all offseason and wondering if you should even re-purchase your season tickets next year. That's just the ballot of emotions you will experience.

Unfortunately that wasn't the only thing thrown. I was in 419 and watched a cowbell thrown from the uppers down into the lower bowl, one of those big iron ones, in towards the direction of Pat Sajak (not even a lie). Never saw the aftermath, or the welt.
After the game I probably picked up about 15 rally towels, discarded in disgust. That said, children in attendance probably picked up about 30 new words to get in trouble with at school.
