Scott Stevens speaks to an upset David Clarkson

Apr 20, 2010, 12:38 PM EDT

When you’re a bit discouraged and upset after taking a number of
penalties in game 3 against the Flyers, including the one that led to
the game-winning goal by Dan Carcillo, it helps to have perhaps one of
the greatest on-ice leaders in the history of the NHL as your assistant
coach.

Scott Stevens, former Devils captain and current assistant
coach, took Clarkson aside and spoke to him about (supposedly) keeping
his head up and keeping that competitive fire going after a downer of a
game. Of course, we’ll never know exactly what he said.

From
Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger:

“I was upset. You’re down,” Clarkson said this morning. “As a
competitor you want to come back the next game and be the difference.

“It was Scotty who spoke to me. I admire him. He pulled me aside and
spoke to me. I appreciate what he said.”

You can certainly understand why Clarkson would be upset, but it’s
tough to fault him for what was certainly a very, very borderline call
in overtime. I’d be more upset with the lack of defensive coverage in
front of the net that allowed Carcillo to get to the rebound all alone.

I am so upset with the Devils right now! How can they keep leaving the back side of the net open all the time? Almost all the goals have been scored that way. For a team that had the least amount of goals scored against them you think they could fix this problem. How come they never have anyone at the back side of the net when they are on offense? There is never anyone for them to pass the puck to across the ice. There should always be someone on the opposite side of the net. Most of their shots are from the blue line and unless someone is in the goalies way it never goes in. All the other teams score on the Devils From inside of 15 feet. I love the Devils but they make it so hard to watch them at times. There is no doubt in my mind that they are the most talented team and can easily win the cup if they just fix a couple of things! Please protect the back side on Defense and use the back side on Offense!! IT WORKS!! Most of the Rangers goals against the Dev’s are also from the back side. I can go on and on about this but I just wish someone can tell them this. GO DEVILS!!!!!!!!!!!!
