A fond farewell for Mike Modano

Apr 10, 2010, 11:59 PM EDT

I can think of no better way for the greatest American player in NHL
history to end such a great career. After providing some incredible
magic two nights ago in Dallas, Modano went back to the place where his
career began: Minnesota.

The fans there were just as warm,
receptive and uplifted as the Stars
fans on Thursday night, and Modano became visibly emotional early in the
game when the fans gave him another lengthy ovation.

Modano has
yet to announce his intentions, but the stars are aligning for a
glorious sendoff. There has been no better farewell for such a great
player, and after tonight there is a sense of finality to a great
career.

The Stars would win in the shootout when Jamie
Benn
— who is poised to take over as the Stars’ face of the
franchise — snapped a wicked shot past Niklas
Backstrom. Yet the highlight of the night, for Stars and Wild fans
alike, was when the first star of the game was announced…
